How to Lay Real Wooden Floors
If you have some basic DIY knowledge, a few simple tools and a spare weekend, it can be easy to fit a new wooden floor. Read on for some expert tips from the specialists at Ajax Flooring to help you to install wooden floors London simply and effectively.
Prepare the Floorboards and Your Room
Open the boards and leave the flooring open in the room for 24 hours to allow it to acclimatise to the humidity. Remove all inward-opening doors to give yourself more room to work, before laying out the boards in the same direction as the longest straight wall.
Remove skirting boards with a crowbar: these can be replaced later with new skirting to match the material of your new floor.
Fit a High-Quality Underlay
Vacuum the floor to remove any dust before fitting an underlay. Trim the underlay to get the perfect fit for your floor, and be sure to find a specialist underlay with a built in vapour barrier if you are fitting your wooden floors London onto a concrete St Albans surface.
Fit Spacers
Spacers can help you to fit your floorboards equally, and can allow room for movement and expansion with humidity. Fit these along the longest straight wall to begin with, leaving 10-15mm for expansion.
Lay Your Floor
Ask your flooring supplier for advice on whether your floor should be nailed or glued for the best results. Lay the first row of flooring and use a try square to create a right angle at the end before cutting.
Cut around pipes by drilling a hole about 5mm larger than the diameter of the pipe. Once your floor is installed, refit your skirting boards to add the perfect finishing touch to your new surface.
